One year for Lent I tried to make an illustration for one passage of Ecclesiastes every day. Add “God” to the list of folks I have let down. In related news, I just realized that I have been reading the LOLspeak abbreviation “FTW” as “Fuck The World” as long as it has been a thing.

I covered this book, The Third Coast, by Thomas Dyja, for Next City. You can see my review here. Then, I had a really substantive conversation with the author, which we ran an edited version of here. It was kind of an amazing talk. I had to do it over the phone and try to type out as much as I could of what he said - which I don’t like doing, because I knew I was missing a lot. It also made it hard for me to engage with what he was saying as well as I might have liked, because I was concentrating so hard on getting it down. Fortunately, I had prepared a bunch of questions in advance, so it was okay. But here’s what surprised me: he and I talked on the phone for an hour. Me asking questions, then me typing furiously as he dropped all kinds of Chicago knowledge on me.  When we were done, I did a word count on what I’d typed. 4400 words.  IN ONE HOUR! Imagine… you really could write that much in an hour if you just had the focus. NaNoWriMo? Please. NaNoWri3DaysOnCoke, you know?

Do you ever wish that Google had a button that you could press when you want to tell it that none of its results are helpful? Last night, I went searching for a date when the nation of Egypt started to prohibit people from climbing the Pyramids. Once upon a time, it was not just legal, but encouraged, that visitors should climb the pyramids. But now you can’t. Too many people are doing it, and the state is worried about preservation. Fine. But I was looking for a date when that change was made. So I did several searches for it last night on Google, and all I found was page after page of people linking to the recently made illegal photos that some Russians took. Yes, the photos are cool. No, these photos are not at all what I’m looking for. And it is frustrating when you do a Google search, and all you find are millions of results that all amount to the exact same thing. A part of me wishes there were a way to point that out to Google when it happens, so that they could eventually adjust their algorithm, and deliver more. When something you want to finds sounds a lot like something else that everyone wants to find, well, good luck with that.  Operating from the assumption that you were most likely to be looking for the thing that most other people were looking for when they did a search for roughly the same thing is what made Google the giant it is, but it clearly doesn’t always work. Sometimes, it has the effect of burying what you need to find. I bet the Internet knows when Egypt ended climbing on the last standing Wonder of the World, but I can’t find it.
