With their mood. They can be slender or fat. They can bestial. They can look like lizards. They can look like wizards. It doesn't really matter.\n\nIn fact, there's so little at stake in Tanith Lee's pair of books, the world is so wealthy and so free of danger, that it's hard to care very much about what happens.\n\n![](https://bradydale.com/blyg/media/8d435930be242cb14e0a19ff89ec9701fdbe37fdf6e413a3fecd12f72f0660a1.jpg)\n\nThe main character of the book is a very young person — a \"Jang\" in the book's lingo. Young people are expected to live loose and easy lives. Have lots of sex. Go to lots of parties. Be tight with a handful of people.\n\nThe protagonist is dissatisfied with her world. She lacks meaning. She wants to *do something.*\n\nHere's what I couldn't get over in the book. There's a male consciousness who is in her friend group and is in love with her. She would sleep with him, except he keeps choosing unattractive bodies. All he needs to do is choose an attractive body ands he will sleep with him. But he won't do that for her. He wants her to love him for him. Not his body.\n\nBut her body and her lovers' bodies are very important to her. She never chooses an ugly body and she never chooses to be male. The bodies she picks mean a great deal to her.\n\nIt was hard for me to enjoy the first novel in this two-novel volume, *Don't Bite the Sun*, so that's all the more I have read. One day, I will read the second half, *Drinking Sapphire Wine*, and I will update this post. I have to do it. It's important [BrainFi](https://bradydale.com/88.html).\n\n—Brady Dale \nOctober 16, 2026",
