Larissa Phillips wrote about how her parents were such hard core leftists, so committed to zero population growth, that they almost terminated her. They didn't, tho, and it yielded a bigger, happier family.

The she and her husband stopped at two children and she regretted it.

Recently I got together with someone I knew in college. She expressed ideological dismay that she had three kids. Her father was zero-population growth advocate. She still believed.

I told her I thought it was good that she had the kids and they were probably happy. She did not take that well. It was terrible. I used to look at the world this way, too. Ideology before everything else. Now, it looks like a very unhappy way to live.

At the end of Phillips essay she writes about how she stopped at two kids, for good, rational, budgetary reasons. And how she's always regretted it.
