Stubbing: The problem with the US is that the culture carriers are extremely uncool.

The problem with the US is that the culture carriers are extremely uncool.

They don't have an ounce of coolness in their DNA.

Everyone suffers from systems that feed on attention and performance. Even the people that build them. Even though they're making money from their creations.

Cool people don't care. They just don't fucking care about the photo or the likes or the opportunities to grift. And they resent the erosion of private experience.

The lack of coolness doesn't get enough attention.

I was writing about this (or roughly this) just yesterday, from the Gen X perspective. For Gen X, it was very high status to be indifferent about audience and reaction and money.

There's been a lot of talk lately about how that's just gone. No one criticizes anyone for selling out any more.

It does seem like cool is still out there, though? People use the world. Folks seem cool, right?

But yeah maybe not. I'm not sure where cool is any longer. Everyone is trying.

Perhaps this is the nature of the end of gatekeepers. In the gatekeeper era, when gatekeepers had money and clout, you could be cool and still succeed, because a gatekeeper noticed you and just gave you a stage. You could get on stage with a shrug. You could be cool about it, but you still got the stage.

In a democratized era, no one is going to pull you on stage. You have to build your own stage, right? How can you look cool when everyone sees you building your own stage?
